Discourse Community Response
Writing is essential in our lives because we see it everywhere we go and it’s what gets us through the day. Writing can be used to explain, persuade, or to inform someone; but in order for our writing to be effective, we must be able to interpret our writing with detail and precision. In today’s society, writing has been modernized and it has been simplified to where it is easier to comprehend what we are reading. Since writing is a big part of our lives, and a big source of communication, we very often use it in our discourse communities.
Within my athlete discourse community the language we use is informal most of the time, unless it comes to the games and talking to officials, we then use a more formal and proper language. We don’t necessarily have to be specific with one another because we basically all understand the sport, soccer, and it doesn’t require much detail to get a point across. To join a team, one must first get informed to make sure they meet the requirements and to be sure that they will be doing what they like. Next, they would have to try out; try outs is the most difficult step in joining a team because one must show dedication and desire for the sport; and the third step would be to make the team. In my soccer team, the girls, the coaches, and I mainly used text messages to communicate with each other. Another method we would use was to “spread the word”. Our goals were to succeed in every game and always try our best; but our priority was to stay united like a family.
Within my next discourse community, a student, it is appropriate to use proper, formal language when speaking to a professor or someone of majority. Within other students, we often use informal language. To join the student discourse community, one must first attend school and obtain a high school diploma; from there students can build the necessary skills in order to gain knowledge and be able to take placement tests and actually place in college level classes. Then, one must get informed about different colleges or universities and determine which one is the most appropriate one according to the person’s desired major. After choosing a school, one must apply and then get accepted. Professors will expect dedication from the student; therefore, assignments will be expected to be turned in whether it’s via e-mail, or paper. Every student’s goal should be to accomplish a career in their desired field and further their education.
My next discourse community, twin sister, might be one of the funnest ones. Being a twin sister doesn’t require much effort, especially when it comes to joining. To join, one must simply be born a twin. The languages we mainly use are informal English and Spanish; and to communicate we mainly use our phones whether it’s through a phone call, a text, or e-mail. Our goal as sisters is that no matter what circumstances might come between each other, as womb mates, we will always be there for each other.
For my last discourse community, girlfriend, it is probably one that is important to me. I don’t normally let people in my life like I’ve let my boyfriend. To join this discourse community, one must first meet someone and then like him or her in order for the relationship to begin. The language is very informal, poetic, silly, and even romantic. Although this discourse community might not be permanent, it is one that is worth it.
Writing can only be effective if what someone is trying to achieve includes a good tone, solid voice, context, medium, genre, and conventions of specific discourse communities to present to an audience. If the audience understands the importance of the content, then the writer has successfully achieved their goal.
