Agency Discourse Memo
Subject: Child Abuse & Neglect.
Dear English 1311 students,
Over the past 12 years, child abuse has increased significantly in the United States with a record of 3.3 million reports of child abuse involving 6 million children. The United States has the worst record with the loss of 5 children everyday due to abuse. The Help Guide is a trusted non-profit resource that presents information to the audience that is interested in learning more about this issue, the abuse and preventions, rather than statistics.
Within this resource, people will learn basic steps to preventing an abuse, how to determine an abuse, and also what type of abuse it is. Most of society doesn’t realize that child abuse is one of the biggest issues there is; yet it is ignored because most of the time they don’t even know it’s there. This guide also makes it easier for the reader to understand child abuse and neglect. Child abuse and neglect is not only about physical damage, but also about the emotional damage. Emotional damage can be more painful than physical pain because a child is still trying to understand life and by being put in difficult situations then the child becomes confused.
The effects of child abuse and neglect will be carried throughout a lifetime; that’s why it is important for people to take notice of the abuse so the child can get the help they need. Effects of child abuse and neglect include lack of trust and relationship difficulties, core feelings of being “worthless” or “damaged”, and trouble regulating emotions. One of the most important and unfortunate effects is when the child loses trust. Once a child loses trust for their parents, it becomes more difficult for them to get help because they feel they can’t tell someone what is going on and feel safe. Sometimes when the trust between a parent and a child is lost, it is because the parent is the creator of the abuse or because the child has tried approaching the parent about the situation and has been ignored.
The three types of child abuse listed in the help guide are emotional child abuse, child neglect, and physical abuse. Being told hurtful words and constantly being humiliated are considered emotional abuse. Anything that is said to put a child down or make them feel inferior falls under this category. Child neglect is a common type of abuse. It consists of failure to provide for a child’s basic needs, or for the child to take the role of a parent. Taking the role of a parent comes in play usually for the older sibling because of the lack of the parent to take care of their children because sometimes they are just too busy or don’t put in the effort. Physical abuse is one of the toughest types of abuse because not only does the child have to put up with physical pain, but also emotional pain due to the situations they are being put through. Sexual abuse falls under this category and unfortunately it is very common, especially with the people that children see very often because they are a trusted family member or friend.
The Help Guide provides plenty of useful information for everyone who is interested in learning more about this topic and for those who are willing to spread awareness. It includes prevention tips and information on how to detect an abuse. By learning more about this topic and the pain children are put through, people can raise awareness and the crimes can be detected and prevented.
Sincerely,
Alejandra Arredondo
